Old Favourites

I made this cape for Casper when he was very small, to see if I could make something for my shop that would be suitable to sell in one size from newborn to toddler and beyond. I am glad to say that it has continued to be worn (and torn) and hopefully will last until next winter too.

I love the thought of having clothes that can grow with children, I am brewing some ideas for "growing" dresses and pants for summer. Oh and in case you were wondering, yes my son is magic.

Pink Mohair Mumsy Cardigan

When I was pregnant with Casper, I decided that if I was going to be a mummy, I needed an extra mumsy cardigan to wear whilst baking banana muffins and wiping snotty noses.

I made up the pattern as I went, measuring it against another cardigan.
It didn't take long to make, as I used larger needles than I'm used to. I'm so happy with the watermelon pink mohair- it's so fluffy and warm.

I have heaps of wool left. I might have to make a replacement when this one becomes encrusted by years of muffins and snot.

Grey Booties

I made these when I was 17 for Studio Arts, they're a little too big for Casper at the moment, I guess my gauge was out! They are pure merino wool.

Violet Baby Cape

This is a baby cape, made from a cardigan I was knitting when I was about 18, but abandoned- due to the size 12 needles and 3 ply wool.

I used a button that my grandmother gave me, from my uncle's pajama shirt when he was a child.

It is quite small, so I hope it fits the baby for at least a month before it goes into the hand-me-down pile!

Ladle Rat Rotten Hut

This is a hooded cape that I knitted for the baby that Steve and I are expecting in about a month!
I used a nice alpaca merino blend and started using a pattern but ended up just rubifying it with some stork fabric and making up a hood pattern as I was a bit sick of knitting garter stitch.

Pom Pom Hat

I made this hat for Steve so his ears wouldn't fall off during Montreal's bloody cold winter.
I just made it up as I went along.

Modeled here by Jordan, my sweet boy.

Knitting+Monkey

Here are some things I have made.

A beret-scarf combination. I made the beret from a tiny kid's pattern and the scarf is my own design.
I like them because they just go so well with my house, you know!

A sock monkey for my brother- I also made a chocolate brown monkey, but I gave it to a baby called Sylvie who moved to Byron Bay at the beginning of the year.
He's still in pretty good form after six months of Ownership By Sebe. Although he looks a bit surprised at the camera flash!

This is a letter-jacket inspired cardigan that I knitted. It is my first cardigan and I started off using a pattern, but as always I strayed so far from the path I couldn't find my way out of the woods, so I just built a little cabin and lived there forever.
I really loved knitting the "R" part on the pocket. My tension was awful and it is crooked, but that pocket is certainly not bereft of character!
Also, do you like my walls? My Dad painted every single unicorn by hand, they go all the way around my room, which is L-shaped, so it covers more wall than the average bear.

And now I have to go to work. And it's not my nice job, where I don't want to leave and I love everyone and I get to be a bartender! NO! It's my shit job where I am the youngest and everyone is mean to me and money-hungry. Where they change the times on my timesheet so that it looks as though I have done one hour less of work. I'm pretty sure that's illegal!
But tomorrow morning I get to wake up early and go to my nice job again and see everyone in St. Kilda wake up!
Sebe just made me a soundtrack for my train journey. He sat in his room for an hour recording all of these songs on his guitar!!! He's the coolest.

Blushing

Well hello again! I am actually back, which is something I thought would never happen. Today I came home early from school because I have an extremely stubborn cold, and I felt bad for sniffling and clutching onto floral hankies while reciting French Grammar. So I took it upon myself to leave.

I HAVE been working though! At the moment, I am making a smocked dress for my Art folio. My theme is a complicated one, that is difficult to explain. However, I will try. I want to create a child- or the concept of a child that is universal, in the way that it is me at all stages in my life up to the age of ten. I am going to explore the links between folklore (that is-parent interference on the child's perception of reality) and imagination, (the unprejudiced and untouched individuality of the child) and the effects that these two factors have on a child and its possessions/a>

I am also knitting a cardigan. It is from a 1956 springtime women's weekly. The pattern is called "sophisticated shortie". Due to the tiny ply and the miniscule needles, I think I should be finished this by oh... 2056?/a>

Well, because of the incessant heat that we are experiencing down here, I have no patience for baking. God. It's awful! But here's a snap of a cake (Raspberry and Pine Nut) that I made to commemorate the death of my last 'Summer as a Schoolgirl'.
It really looked amazing, but couldn't be appreciated. As soon as it was on the cooling rack, the sun split through the clouds and poured sticky-hot daylight down. I did make a delightful yoghourt-cream with a few raspberries plopped throughout, and that was well received./a>

And now I am sitting on a cushion, eating a very blushed peach!
Oh! Onto more essays and seaming of silk dresses for me!
Good Afternoon!
Love, Ruby
